Written in pencil on the back of the image is Fig. 60, p.190 / The late chief Kai Lundu, Luawa, Upper Mende / No.16 / Alldridge Neg List No 16 . Kai Lundu was a famous warrior and the chief of Luawa, an extensive territory on what became Sierra Leone’s eastern border with Liberia. The town of Kailahun (‘Kai’s town’) is named after him. He died in 1895. Published as Figure 60 in T. J. Alldridge, 1901, The Sherbro and Its Hinterland (London: Macmillan). Same as BMAG:WA900246.
