Brass Mask

A unusual brass mask, beaten from a decorated brass dish made in India. The Sierra Leone National Museum records note that it may be part of a mask associated with the Temne mask of chieftaincy, known as Aron Arabai, or the Limba Gbendekolo mask, worn for mourning, or wailing, ceremonies. The latter is worn at the side of the face, removing the need for eye holes. The holes around the side of the mask are likely to be for the attachment of raffia, leather, or fabric.
