Commemorative Trowel

This commemorative trowel was presented to the Governor of Sierra Leone in 1904 to mark the laying of the foundation stone for the Thomas Agricultural Academy in Mabang. S. B. (Abuke) Thomas (1833-1901) was a well known Krio business man who left a bequest of £60,000 to build the college, with the intention of teaching agricultural skills and Christianity. The school building was completed in 1912. The inscription reads: Presented to His Excellency Leslie Probyn Esq. - Gov. of Sierra Leone on the occasion of laying the foundation stone of the S.B. Thomas Agricultural Academy, 1904 . The trowel is made of silver, and sits in a brown leather case, lined with red velvet.
