An ethno-linguistic group occupying a number of chiefdoms in north-western Sierra Leone between the Limba and the Temne. They speak a language which is closely related to Mende and it seems likely that at one time they formed a single unit with the Mende but became separated from the latter by an eastward advance of the Temne people in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their cultural institutions bear a marked resemblance to those of their Temne and Limba neighbours.
