Ornamental Ivory Scultpure

This carved Ivory tusk forms part of a collection of five similar items produced from the 1850s onwards for the early trade in African souvenirs. Most were carved in coastal Congo, however they were later sold up and down the wet coast of Africa. This example depicts three tiers of spiralling male and female figures in relief.
