Fula bailol solo
Ethnomusicological sound recording made by Cootje van Oven. Fula bailol solo (musical bow). The bailol can be seen in the photograph. It resembles a hunting bow. Its string in this item is made from a vine which is flat on the instrument. The bow is cut green and dried in bowed position for two months. A small stick is wedged between bow and string to adjust pitch etc. The string is plucked with the index or middle fingers of the right hand which is held near the chest. The thumb and index fingers of the left hand vary the pitch of the string by closing and opening on it in a rhythmic pattern. The mouth is held next to the string where it joins the bow, and acts as a resonator. The string of this bailol measures 27.25" and the bow 37.25".
