Fula song
Ethnomusicological sound recording made by Cootje van Oven. Fula song, accompanied by one tambe and one guitar with capo tasto and amplifier. Performers are pictured in the photograph. The singer, who has been all over the country, is the specific singer/dancer for the Paramount Chief of Mambolo Chiefdom, also in Kambia District. After singing two earlier sons she told us that she wanted to sing "another song from her Chief", but we have not got the actual meaning of the song. Names of people and places can be heard in it. Both the singing and the dancing are most expressive. The tambe is a transverse flute. There is not absolute certainty about the number of finger holes in this particular tambe, but three is likely. The instrument is 28" long. In this song (not in the earlier ones) the guitar player clicks the fingers of his non-plucking hand against the back of his guitar and just plucks two open strings alternately whenever the singer is singing. In the instrumental interludes he goes back into more elaborate melodic playing.
