Garra Cloth

A piece of garra cloth. Garra refers to a method of dying which involves Preparing the cotton by starching, then folding or tucking the cloth, and securing it with raffia or cotton string. When dyed, the dye does not penetrate the parts when it has been folded or tucked, leaving a geometric pattern. The pattern on this example has, however, been create using batik, or wax. A stamp covered in wax was used to pattern the fabric; when is was dyed with indigo, the waxed pattern was left white. This example is decorated with human figures.
