Magpere Mask
This is one of two masks, described as Magpere , or Bateyale masks, used in circumscision ceremonies among the Kuranko. They resemble the Limba Kuthombo masks in form, and such masks are carried with two hands by the performer, making little attempt to conceal the wearer. Kuthombo maskers accompany boys into the sacred bush during the male initiation, and act as intermediaries between the bush and the village. These Magpere masks may perform a similar function, and be worn in a similar fashion.
