Ancient Pottery
This pot is part of a collection of 28 pots discovered by a road worker travelling from Manjuru to Grima, in 1962. They were found in cave, approximately 2 feet below the surface of the road. Further pot shards, and the floor of a pottery kiln, were also found nearby, suggesting pottery manufacture took place locally. Once these pots had been found, they were taken to the chief's house, who then returned them to the cave. G. L. Schulze, a Peace Crops volunteer at the Sierra Leone National Museum, returned to Manjuru later in 1962, to find that the local village believed there to be a spirit living in the cave. A number of sheep and fowl had apparently been sacrificed and thrown into the hole, which was later covered by a bamboo roof. Schulze acquired permission from the chief to remove two of the pots and bring them to the museum.
