Gongoli Mask
The Sierra Leone National Museum catalogue notes that this is a gongoli, or kongoli, mask. Gongoli masks are typically roughly carved with animal-like features, a large nose and wide mouth, though this example has more human-like features than is usual. The gongoli masquerader comes out to provide light entertainment, particularly during more solemn occasions such as funerals. It is not particular to any cultural groups in Sierra Leone. This mask is complete with its raffia, and has cross-shaped scarification on either cheek.
