Nomoli
This is a particularly interesting stone carving insofar as it bears close resemblance to the form of the Temne aRong aThoma mask (see BM:Af.1969.5.1). This is a masquerade figure of the raGbenle Society, found particularly in the Tonkolili District in the centre of Sierra Leone, an area which is not associated with stone carving traditions. It is interesting to note that the carving was indeed collected in Tonkolili District. A similar stone carving can be found in the collections of the British Museum (BM:Af.1909.220.3), acquired in 1909, although recorded as being collected in Mendeland .
