Photographic Print
Black and white photographic print showing three young women, probably initiated into the Sande society, wearing a rattle, or bunjue, on their backs while dancing. They wear pieces of imported printed cloth as skirtcloths, or lappa. It is card mounted and signed: T.J. Alldridge F.R.C.S. , with the caption: Upper Mendi women wearing the Bunjue – a musical accompaniment, suspended from the waist, while dancing . Published as Figure 67 in T. J. Alldridge, 1901, The Sherbro and Its Hinterland (London: Macmillan). Alldridge notes that the photograph was taken in a place he records as Befuin, where he was treated to a country dance the like of which [he] had never seen .
