Photographic Print
Black and white photographic print showing Reverend Daniel Flickinger Wilberforce (holding an open Bible) and his pupils at Shenge, or Shaingay, Mission School. Daniel Flickinger Wilberforce (1856-1927) was born in Imperi chiefdom to Christian parents, and was named after Daniel Kumler Flickinger, one of the early United Brethren in Christ missionaries. He was educated in Dayton, Ohio, in the United Brethren theological school, and returned to Shenge in 1878 as an ordained missionary, and principal of its mission school. Following the Hut Tax War in 1898, he was appointed Paramount Chief of Imperi chiefdom, but he was subsequently accused of involvement in cannibal murders and, although the charges were never proved, was sent into exile in Liberia. This photo is part of a collection from an album put together by William Vivian in 1889; Vivian was a Missionary with the United Methodist Free Churches, and is likely to have taken the photographs himself.
