Photographic Print

Black and white photographic print showing chief Pa Sorie, or Suri Kessebe (seated in the centre). Pa Sorie was a Loko warrior who came from the north in the 1840s to assist the Caulker chiefs of Bumpe chiefdom in wars with the Temne of Yoni. He was rewarded for his services by being made chief of Rotifunk. Pa Sorie converted to Christianity in 1892, shortly after this photograph was taken. He died in 1897. This photo is part of a collection from an album put together by William Vivian in 1889; Vivian was a Missionary with the United Methodist Free Churches, and is likely to have taken the photographs himself. This is an albumen print.
